Tweed Heads Visitor Information Centre officially opened

November 2, 2009

The Tweed Heads Visitor Information Centre was officially opened today by Mayor of Tweed Warren Polglase and Justine Elliot, Minister for Ageing and Federal Member for Richmond.

The project is a partnership between Tweed Shire Council, Tourism NSW and the Australian Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan.

Cr Polglase said the state-of-the-art centre would showcase the many natural and built attractions of the Tweed and North Coast of NSW.

“This building represents the three levels of government working together for the good of the tourism industry and the Tweed as a whole,” Cr Polglase said.

“I would like to thank Tourism NSW and the Australian Government for their commitment to tourism in the construction of this wonderful visitor information centre that is now one of the best in New South Wales.”

Tweed Tourism is operating the centre and has reported increased visitor patronage since the doors opened to the public a few weeks ago.

Tweed Tourism General Manager Phil Villiers said the Visitor Information Centre is a highly visible tourist facility on the New South Wales/Queensland border and will assist with the promotion of the Tweed.

“It is in a wonderful position, strategically located on the corner of Wharf and Bay streets, one of the most significant intersections in the Tweed Heads CBD and adjacent to the park and Jack Evans Boat Harbour,” Mr Villiers said.

The purpose-built $658,720 Gateway Information Centre includes an information service area, an administration section, public toilets, a plaza and a grassed area linking to the Jack Evans Boat Harbour redevelopment which is currently under way.

The building’s display area offers a unique open-air design which integrates with the surrounding park at the rear and the Wharf Street frontage, reducing the need for air-conditioning.

In 2004 the Tweed Heads Master Plan was established by the State Government to guide the revitalisation of the Tweed Heads CBD.

One of the main highlights of the plan was the redevelopment of the Jack Evans Boat Harbour as a major tourism destination, and this iconic gateway visitor information centre is the first step in that process.

Tweed Shire Council committed $330,000 to the project, Tourism NSW provided $178,720 and the Australian Government contributed $150,000.
