Telstra drops plan for $2.20 non-electronic payment fee

November 4, 2009

Telstra has dropped its controversial plan to charge customers $2.20 for not paying their bills electronically.

Page MP Janelle Saffin said today she thanks Telstra CEO David Thodey for dropping the $2.20 charge.

“I want to thank my colleague, Sid Sidebottom, the Member for Braddon, who I worked with in raising this issue in Parliament,” she said.

“I wrote to Mr Thodey in August calling on him to immediately withdraw this unfair penalty on customers who couldn’t or didn’t want to pay online or by direct debit.

“By withdrawing this fee, Mr Thodey has demonstrated that he is genuine about improving customer relations.

“And locally I thank all those who wrote to me or to Mr Thodey directly to protest about this unfair fee for the privilege of paying your bill.

“The $2.20 fee appeared particularly mean, in the light of Telstra’s annual profit of more than $4 billion.

“Today’s announcement shows that when people get together to apply pressure, it can work.”
