Casino TAFE’s new campus opened

November 9, 2009

Member for Page Janelle Saffin today opened new facilities at TAFE NSW’s Casino Campus which will improve vocational education and training for students on the Northern Rivers.

The Australian Government provided $2.3 million towards the project to demolish two old buildings and establish new facilities for business/administration services.

The funding also allowed for the refurbishment of the shop fitting and engineering trades area.

Ms Saffin, who opened the facilities on behalf of Federal Minister for Education Julia Gillard, said the project will offer up to 750 students access to industry-standard equipment and facilities.

“These six new classrooms and two refurbished workshops give students from the Richmond Valley and Kyogle Shire the real advantage of training with equipment that is being used by industry now,” she said.

“Some students come from as far afield as Kempsey and New England for shop fitting and detailed joinery experience. Other improvements include teachers’ offices, an undercover outdoor area for students and a covered walkway.”

Ms Saffin congratulated Director, TAFE NSW North Coast Institute Elizabeth McGregor, Campus Manager Wayne Eliasson, and project managers, Ballina-based construction firm T F Woollam & Son.

The $2.3-million grant for the Casino campus was provided under the Australian Government’s National Training Infrastructure Program.

This program funds the purchase, construction, fit-out and refurbishment of facilities for vocational education and training.

The NSW Government contributed more than $470,000 to the project.

The Australian Government’s investment in vocational education includes $2.5 billion to establish trades training centres in schools across Australia, and $2 billion over five years for 711,000 new training places.
