Four educational shows set to open at the Tweed River Art Gallery

Art Gallery Director Susi Muddiman said the four exhibitions on display included artwork by primary, secondary and tertiary students.

“The Tweed River Art Gallery has an ongoing commitment to support and display the work of students who have a passion for the arts – no matter what age or background,” Ms Muddiman said.

“The exhibitions investigate a diverse range of subject matter and are executed in a wide variety of styles and media. These exhibitions offer audiences a survey of the private concerns, personal responses and public opinions of artists of all ages from our region.”

Lester Searle, Director, TAFE Services ITCI, will officially open the exhibition titled ‘big bag’, which showcases the work of Diploma of Graphic Design students.

Mr Searle will also open ‘surface’, representing the work of graduates in the Certificate IV and Diploma courses in Visual Arts.

These two exhibitions showcase selected work by students from the North Coast Institute of TAFE, Murwillumbah and Kingscliff campuses.

‘surface’ includes work by nine graduates of the Diploma in Visual Art, and ‘big bag’ presents work by 14 graduates of the Diploma of Graphic Design.

The region’s HSC Visual Arts students’ exhibition, Frameworks 2009, will be opened by Margaret Strong, Tweed Shire Council’s Youth Development Officer.

LPPP 2009 Jordana Teamo 1st prize 8-10 yrs Dungay PSFrameworks 2009 presents a dynamic display of artworks created by HSC students from eight local secondary schools: Murwillumbah, Tweed River, Kingscliff and Wollumbin High Schools, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School and Mt St Patrick, Tweed Valley and St Joseph’s Colleges.

The Gallery is also presenting the Les Peterkin Portrait Prize for Children (LPPP), which will have a separate opening on Sunday 22 November.

The Gallery celebrates the work of the Tweed’s younger artists in this popular and vibrant exhibition. Now in its 13th year, the theme for 2009 is ‘Go Green’.

This year 1300 ’environmental’ portraits were submitted by students from 25 localprimary schools. Students depicted faces as trees, hills and animals using materials that included sticks, sand, shells, old newspapers, bottle tops and even cooking spices.

The 2009 judges were environmental artist Tania Summerell, the Gallery’s Assistant Director Anne Schardin, Art Teacher Cheryl Forrester and LPPP glass artist Deb Cocks.

The judges short-listed 121 works. From these 40 works were presented major awards and will be displayed on the Gallery walls, while the remaining 81 works, which were awarded Judges’ Awards for Excellence, will be presented in display folders.

On Sunday 22 November the Go Green – 13th Les Peterkin Portrait Prize for Children Public Program and Awards Presentation will be held.

Children are invited to arrive from 10am to create a self-portrait. The official opening by Peter Meadows, Principal, Tyalgum Public School will be at 11am and the Award’s namesake, Les Peterkin, will present certificates and prizes to winning students.
