Main Beach Byron Bay wins Clean Beach award
November 12, 2009
Main Beach Byron Bay has today been declared the Northern Rivers Regional Winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beach Challenge for 2010.
Tallow Beach, Airforce Beach, Dreamtime Fingal Main Beach, Lennox Head, South Ballina to Airforce Beach and Fingal Head were also award category Winners in the Northern Rivers region.
Now in its ninth year, the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beach Challenge enhances beachside communities by promoting environmental awareness, personal initiative, and civic pride.
The program recognises and rewards coastal communities, local councils, volunteers and surf lifesaving clubs and schools for initiatives that enhance, protect and preserve the NSW coastline.
This includes dune and habitat conservation, community and business partnerships and environmental protection and education.
“The Clean Beach Challenge has been extremely competitive this year with a range of beaches receiving awards for their excellence. Many of the beaches are showing true initiative in dealing with their delicate beach environments,” Chief Executive Officer Peter McLean said.
“Main Beach Byron Bay is the clear regional winner of this hotly contested award and will now be in the running, with other regional winners from up and down the New South Wales coast, for the State award to be announced in Sydney on Friday 4 December.”
Dan Meehan, Clean Beach Challenge Assessor for the Northern Rivers region, gave insight into why Main Beach Byron Bay was the Overall Northern Rivers RegionalWinner.
“Byron Bay’s Main Beach has it is all. Due to its popularity with tourists and residents alike, this fragile beach environment comes under pressure every day,” he said.
“It is the strong partnerships and dedicated volunteers who protect this magnificent beach.
“The beach features a beautifully appointed swimming pool, well-appointed disabled facilities including easy access tracks, picnic tables, rest rooms and the Surf Life Saving Club provides attachable beach wheels for wheelchairs.
“Playgrounds are first-rate and all use environmentally accredited materials in their construction. The Byron Council and its local community meet every challenge through this wonderful beach.”
