Rescue helicopter recognised with police award

November 12, 2009

NSW Police Awards - Bruce Lyons and Kris BeavisWhen the pilots and crew of Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter take off on their daily missions, the last thing they think about is recognition for their work. But that’s just what they got at a NSW Police Force awards ceremony last week.

While presenting rescue helicopter general manager Kris Beavis with the award, NSW Police Superintendent Bruce Lyons made mention of the support and professionalism that he and his officers received from the helicopter crews.

The wording on the certificate stated the award was in recognition of the valuable service provided to accident victims and for the expertise and co-operation of helicopter staff.

The statement went on to praise Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter staff for their ‘outstanding commitment to community safety and for improving the effectiveness of police responses’.

Mr Beavis said he was ‘pleasantly surprised’ when advised the rescue helicopter would receive the award and said it was humbling to be recognised for providing what he described as ‘an essential aero-medical service’.

“The first thing I would have to say is that our crew do this job because they believe in the importance of our service – not for any recognition they might receive,” Mr Beavis said.

“That said, it’s great to know that the important, and often difficult, work we do at Westpac Life Saver is being seen by others in the emergency services field as positive and worthy of recognition.

“I thank Superintendent Lyons and the NSW Police Force for this wonderful award.”
