Community campaign success, says TOOT: so-called Rail Trail Bill withdrawn

November 17, 2009

The Transport Administration Bill (Rail Trails) 2009 has been withdrawn by the NSW Government.

“We’re glad to hear that the Government has realised the folly of selling off railway lines across the State,” said Ms Karin Kolbe, President of TOOT.

“Perhaps they now realise that rail lines are needed in high-growth areas, in rural areas, and are an important method of reducing carbon emissions.

“TOOT thanks the groundswell of people who sent many emails and letters to the NSW parliamentarians pointing out the deficiencies of the Bill.

“TOOT thanks everyone who campaigned so vigourously to defeat this Bill, including Lee Rhiannon and the Greens, the Rail Tram Bus Union, The Nationals, the Liberals, the NSW Teachers Federation, the NSW Farmers Association, the Country Women’s Association, the Australian Conservation Foundation, the Combined Pensioners and Superannuants, and several rail groups across the State, including Newcastle Transport for Business Development, Save Our Rail (Newcastle), EcoTransit, Friends of Northern Railway and many others.

“TOOT reminds our Federal Labor representatives, particularly Justine Elliott, of the need to honour election promises to provide rail services.

“The campaign to see Trains on our Tracks continues and we invite the NSW Transport Minister and the Federal Government to work together to deliver services.”
