Work begins at three local schools under modernisation program

November 19, 2009

Page MP Janelle Saffin says the turning of the first sod at three local schools today marks the start of building works in their local communities worth more than $1.3 million.

Under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century program, the Rudd Government is spending $850,000 on new classroom facilities at Coutts Crossing Public School, $250,000 for a library at Harwood Island Public School and $250,000 for a multi-purpose space at Broadwater Public School.

Ms Saffin said across Page there are 80 schools receiving a total of more than $99 million in funding for infrastructure under P21.

“These projects are all part of the Rudd Government’s $42 billion Nation Building-Economic Stimulus Plan to support jobs, stimulate local economies and invest in important infrastructure to benefit local communities for the long term,” she said.

“On school visits I regularly hear about the need for new facilities and maintenance and that’s just what the Primary Schools for the 21st Century program and the National School Pride program is delivering.

“Now these school communities, parents and trades-people will be able to work together to deliver these important projects, that once completed will give our teachers and students the 21st century facilities that they so richly deserve.

“In the case of Broadwater Public School, the community has also been telling me about their need for better road safety conditions at the school.

“I can advise the school that I have taken up their cause and am doing everything I can to get a speed camera on the Pacific Highway at Broadwater.”
