Tweed Shire activties for International Day of People with a Disability

November 19, 2009

On 3 December each year International Day of People with a Disability is celebrated worldwide to recognise the achievements and contributions of people with a disability.

Tweed Shire Council’s Community Worker Aged and Disability, Maggie Groff, said: “Celebrating the day raises public awareness of issues facing people with a disability, as well as showcasing their skills and abilities.”

This year, there will be celebration events held in Tweed Shire and Alstonville.

On Wednesday 2 December, Sailability on Tweed will hold a ‘Come and Try Day’ for people with disabilities at the boat ramp, Dry Dock Road, Tweed Heads South.

There will also be a free barbecue.

Sailability on Tweed is an all-volunteer organisation and a volunteer will sail with you in a specially designed sailing dinghy.

People with all types of disabilities, even those with restricted mobility are welcome. Bookings are essential – to book call Tweed Valley Respite Service Inc on (07) 5524 8185 by 25 November.

This event is supported by Tweed Shire Council and Tweed Valley Respite Service Inc.

On Sunday 13 December Tweed Shire Council is pleased to support Disabled Surfers Far North Coast who will facilitate the Cocky Classic 2009, a free hands-on day of surfing for people with a disability.

Participants should meet at 10am at the park next to Cudgen Headland Surf Lifesaving Club in Kingscliff – and don’t forget your swimmers and sunscreen.

For information call Peter Stannard on 0438 580 537. Volunteers are also needed, so if you wish to help, please contact Peter.

Tweed Shire Vacation Care has invited the families, friends and service providers of the children with special needs who attend their centre to a Games Circuit with fun activities and a delicious afternoon tea on Thursday 3 December. This event is also supported by Tweed Shire Council.

On Thursday 3 December from 9am–3pm the Far North Coast Festival of Ability will take place at Alstonville Showground Leisure and Entertainment Centre.

Activities will include demonstrations, art and photography exhibitions, choirs, dance, drumming, information stalls plus many interactive displays.

Entry is free. For enquiries contact Lee on (02) 6686 3822 or 0423 492 596 or Amanda on 1800 052 222.
