Public meeting for Cobaki and Terranora Broadwaters plan
November 21, 2009
Tweed Shire Council recently prepared a Catchment Management Plan for Cobaki and Terranora Broadwaters and the Terranora Creek to address concerns about the declining health of these waterways.
The Draft Cobaki and Terranora Broadwater Catchment Management Plan is currently in draft form and is on public exhibition until 29 January 2010.
A public meeting to present the draft plan is being held at 6pm on Wednesday, November 25, at the South Sea Islander Room, Tweed Heads Civic Centre, Brett Street, Tweed Heads.
The Catchment Management Plan contains a detailed analysis of the Broadwaters’ environmental values, as well as a description of the issues which affect their health.
Measures which will need to be implemented by government and the community over the next decade to arrest declines in the health of these waterways will be outlined.
Council’s Waterways Program Leader Tom Alletson said the Draft Cobaki and Terranora Broadwaters Catchment Management Plan presented a schedule of recommendations for activities that will protect and restore the ecological health of these waterways.
“The document is underpinned by detailed water quality monitoring and ecosystem response modelling, and presents an analysis of issues such as shorebird habitat, rural catchment rehabilitation, the impact of major urban development, dredging, recreation and climate change,” Mr Alletson said.
Copies of the document on CD are available from Council’s Natural Resource Management Unit, and hard copies are available in Council’s libraries and administration centres.
A Report Card on the health of these waterways released by Council in August this year highlighted major concerns about the state of the waterways as well as providing valuable information for future improvement.
