RAAF to hold night flying operations on east coast

November 21, 2009

Essential night flying operations will be conducted from 23 November–3 December as part of the East Coast Air Defence Exercise (ECADEX 09).

Up to 28 military aircraft from RAAF Amberley (Qld), RAAF Williamtown (NSW) and Tindal (NT) will participate in the annual exercise.

The majority of the aircraft assets and personnel will be operating out of their home bases at RAAF Williamtown and RAAF Amberley for the duration of the exercise. Exercise flying will be conducted over water from Newcastle to Evans Head.

Night flying operations will not be conducted at Salt Ash Weapons Range or Evans Head. Noise abatement procedures will be in force during night operations.

The RAAF says night flying is an essential part of training and provides valuable experience for pilots to practise operating safely in difficult conditions.

“Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in planning for and the conduct of military activity,” it said.

For further information on RAAF Williamtown flying activities, members of the community are encouraged to ring RAAF Base Williamtown 1800 033 200.
