December 1, 2009

Police have arrested and charged an 18-year-old male with the sexual assault of a teenage girl during Schoolies celebrations at Byron Bay.

The male allegedly attacked the 17-year-old in the sand dunes on Main Beach some time between 10.45pm and 11.30pm yesterday (Monday 30 November).

The girl, from Melbourne’s north-western outskirts, managed to break free and run away.

She alerted police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command a short time later and officers immediately commenced inquiries.

It’s understood both the alleged offender and the victim had been in the area as part of Schoolies celebrations.

About 10.30am today, detectives attended a holiday house on Kingsley Street, Byron Bay, and arrested an 18-year-old male.

He was taken to the Byron Bay police station and questioned by investigators before being charged with sexual assault, indecent assault and assault.

The male, from country Victoria, has been granted conditional bail to appear in Byron Bay Local Court on Friday, 8 January, 2010.
