Brunswick Heads’ Festival of the Fish n Chips celebrates 50 years

Brunswick Heads will host its annual Festival of the Fish n Chips from Saturday, January 9, and this year it’s a special occasion – the event’s 50th anniversary.

The event was first held in 1961, and since then it has drawns tens of thousands of visitors to the town.

Events at the festival are highlighted by the woodchopping competitions, and this year there also will be a masters surf lifesaving event, an athletics carnival, sand modelling and a 50-year reunion get-together.

As well, the local lawn bowls and golf clubs are holding competitions.

The program includes:

SATURDAY, JANUARY 9
9.30am: Hotel Brunswick’s Brunswick masters surf carnival.
2pm: Fishing competition registration (Housie Shed, Banner Park).
9pm: Festival fireworks display, Banner Park.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 10
8.30am: Brunswick Heads Bowling Club athletics carnival, Stan Thompson Oval, Brunswick Heads Sports Fields.
10am: Fishing competition weigh-in and presentation (Housie Shed, Banner Park).

MONDAY, JANUARY 11

11am: Sand modelling registration Brunswick Heads beach – south wall in front of VRA tower (competition from 11.30am-12.30pm).

TUESDAY, JANUARY 12
6.30pm: ‘Celebrating 50 Years’ reunion get-together, Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13
1.30pm – 5pm, 7pm-9pm: woodchop carnival program, Banner Park.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 14
Noon-6pm, 7.30pm-9pm: woodchop carnival program, Banner Park.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 15
9.30am-12.30pm, 1.30pm-5pm,7pm to 9pm: woodchop carnival program.
5.30pm: Mullumbimby Show Society barbecue, Banner Park.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 16
Cobra Car Club of Queensland display Memorial Park, Brunswick Heads.
Noon-5pm, 7pm-9pm: woodchop carnival program, Banner Park.
