Tweed police find hidden hydro cannabis crop worth $2m

March 31, 2010

Police from the Tweed/Byron proactive Target Action Group (TAG) today seized hydroponic cannabis crop with a potential street value of $2 million which was hidden in an underground bunker.

As part of an ongoing investigation targeting drug offences, Tweed/Byron LAC police swooped on the 40-hectare property on Cadaga Road, Fernvale, near Murwillumbah, about 7.30am today.

Police will allege that on the property they located two buried shipping containers full of hydroponic cannabis plants, ranging from 15-30cm in height.

It is alleged that up to 380 plants were found, as well as about 100g of cannabis resin and 200g of cannabis leaf.

During the search warrant, a 40-year-old man was arrested and taken to Murwillumbah police Station where he was interviewed and later charged with cultivate commercial quantity of prohibited drug.

A 38-year-old woman was issued with a court attendance notice in relation to the possession of a prohibited drug.

Police from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command described it as a ‘well-established and elaborate set-up’.

“We are committed in this area to targeting the cultivation of cannabis, whether it is hydroponic or from outside crops like the ones we recently seized with the NSW Drug Squad during the Cannabis Eradication Program,” said Tweed/Byron Duty officer, Inspector Darren Steel.

“Unfortunately drugs are an issue up here. And this is not the first time we have found underground bunkers containing cannabis.

“Seizures like today are a reminder to the criminals who set them up that we will do all we can to put them out of their illegal business.”

The man will appear at Murwillumbah Local Court on April 7 and the woman will appear at the same court on April 12.
