Three girls were injured when a ferris wheel car in which they were being carried broke free and fell about 8m during a festival near Byron Bay last night.

Two girls aged 15, one from Tweed Heads and the other from Queensland, suffered back injuries, while a 16-year-old girl from Byron Bay escaped with cuts and abrasions.

Witnesses told police the girls were able to climb from the car after it fell 7m to 8m shortly after 7pm.

They were treated at the scene by NSW paramedics and taken Tweed Heads Hospital.

Police preserved the scene for WorkCover inspectors, who will be conducting the investigation.
