Extensive search fails to find missing swimmer at Byron Bay

May 12, 2010

Surf Life Saving NSW rescue resources have been stood down for the day in the search for a missing US national who was last seen swimming at Tallow Beach near Byron Bay yesterday.

Four Surf Rescue jet skis from Byron, Lennox Head and Ballina, along with an Inflatable Rescue Boat from Byron and a Marine Rescue vessel from Ballina conducted an extensive search this morning, however no signs of the man were found.

The search was conducted from the northern end of Tallow Beach, south to Broken Head and a kilometre out to sea and included a thorough investigation of the rocky outcrops around Broken Head.

Deteriorating weather conditions forced the search to be suspended at around midday. A strong southerly front has brought strong winds, choppy conditions and rising seas which hampered the search effort.

Weather conditions will be re-assessed tomorrow morning and the decision to resume the search will be made then by Water Police.
