Two men have sustained severe burns in a petrol fire and explosion at a northern New South Wales property.

About 6pm yesterday (Friday 29 October), the men set fire to a pile of rubbish at a property on Roseberry Creek Road at Roseberry Creek, near Kyogle.

One of the men then poured petrol onto the flames and the fuel vapours ignited, causing a minor explosion.

The fire spread quickly to a nearby petrol can, which also exploded.

A 31-year-old man sustained significant burns to his legs and arms, while a 19-year-old man suffered burns to his lower left leg.

Police from Richmond Local Area Command, NSW Ambulance Paramedics and Rural Fire Service and SES crews responded to the incident.

The injured pair was airlifted by rescue helicopter to Lismore Hospital.

The older man was then transferred on to a hospital in Brisbane.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
