Police are appealing for public assistance following a serious motor vehicle crash near Casino yesterday.

About 11.15pm a green Holden Commodore was travelling east along Ellangowan Road at Ellangowan when it allegedly failed to negotiate a right-hand bend, left the roadway and struck a tree.

As a result the 31-year-old driver and his 32-year-old male passenger, both from Casino, sustained serious head and chest injuries.

Both men were taken by ambulance to Lismore Base Hospital where they remain in intensive care in a stable condition.

A blood sample was taken from the driver and investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing by officers from Ballina Crash Investigation Unit.

The vehicle has been seized for mechanical examination.
