The Pacific Highway will be closed for a number of hours after a truck crash on the Far North Coast this afternoon near Tintenbar.

About 12pm, a petrol tanker rolled and exploded on the Pacific Highway, Cumbalum, about 10km north of Ballina. Police are unable to confirm the condition of the driver at this stage.

The Pacific Highway is currently closed in both directions and diversions are in place. Motorists should take alternate routes.

Police from Richmond LAC are investigating the crash and any witnesses should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NSW Transport Management Centre has advised motorists to use an alternative route to the Pacific Highway.

Light vehicles can use Bangalow Road.

Heavy vehicles southbound will have to be parked, but those going north can still use the New England Highway and/or Summerland Way.
