Police from the Richmond Local Area Command are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash that occurred in earlier today south of Ballina.

Shortly after 6am (Wednesday 5 January) police were called to the Pacific Highway, about 15km south of New Italy, where a vehicle had crashed into an embankment.

The 44-year-old driver from Tyndale received internal injuries and was taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a serious condition.

The 16-year-old male front passenger from Woodburn died at the scene.

The 15-year-old female from Tyndale who was sitting in the rear of the vehicle received two fractured legs and was air-lifted to Lismore Base Hospital also in a serious condition.

Inquiries into the cause of the collision are continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
