Exhibition marks opening of Heritage Festival
March 31, 2008
Ballina Shire Council Council will officially launch the local section of the National Trust’s Annual Heritage Festival on Friday April 4 at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery with the opening of the ‘The Hills Look Down to the Sea: A glimpse at the European heritage of the Ballina Shire’ exhibition, at 10.30am.
The council is again this year participating in the Heritage Festival, one of the longest-running community festivals in New South Wales.
In association with the shire’s history, and other organisations, the council has co-ordinated a program of events which it says is in keeping with this year’s Festival theme, Our Place.
The Festival will run from 5-20 April. According to the National Trust, the theme Our Place encourages the community to think broadly about what our heritage can encompass.
“Our Place is about Australia and its people,” the Trust said.
“Our Place is a home, a building, a club, a street, a business, a trade, a playing field, or a theatre.
“Our Place may also be a museum, an art gallery, a restaurant, an historic site, a garden, a shopping mall, or a sports stadium.
“Our Place is a shire, a region, the State, our country, our place in the world, even a place that exists in collective memory, or a future place.”
A copy of the Festival’s program of events is available on the council’s website at www.ballina.nsw.gov.au
Programs are also available at the Ballina Visitor Information Centre in River Street and the council’s Customer Service Centre on the Corner of Cherry and Tamar streets, Ballina.
