Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina says quite a few bream are kicking around the bottom reaches of the river, with flathead and blackfish there as well.

Yabbies and worms are working for the blackfish and there’s no sign of any local weed yet.

Jewfish have been all right around the seawalls and at the back of the police station and RSL Club on live bait and hard and soft lures. A few fish have been around 15kg and there are quite a few nice schoolies around 10kg.

Before the swell came up there were tailor in reasonable numbers at Lennox Head and South Ballina Beach. South Beach has also had some good snowy bream.

Outside was good for snapper in close before the swell came up but that’s now out of the question for a few days.

Crappy weather at Evans Head over the past few days, swell about 2m and gusts around 20 knots. Beaches and headlands did have a few bream and the odd patch of tailor and for a day or so the water was the clearest it’s been since Christmas.

Snapper and trag were being caught in reasonably close before the sea came up and will no doubt be on the bite when the weather clears.

The river has a few fair bream and more decent flathead than have been around for some years.
