Grand final time for AFL Northern Rivers juniors

It’s that ‘one day in September’ for four of the local junior teams in AFL Northern Rivers this weekend with the grand finals to be contested on Sunday, September 20, at Schulz Oval, Bangalow.

The Under-12 grand final is to be contested by the undefeated minor premiers Tweed Coast Tigers, the newest club in the competition, and the home team Byron Bay Magpies.

The Tigers are coached by Chris Masters and have the upper hand with big Kurt Skuse in the ruck and prolific ball-winner Michael Arnold in the middle.

The Magpies are not going to let Tweed Coast have it all their way thoughf,with coach Jamie Touzel saying John Pupangamirri and Caleb Thompson will lead the way for the underdogs.

The Magpies have a bit of confidence after defeating third-placed Lismore Swans in last week’s preliminary final.

The game commences at 10am, with presentations following the Under-14 grand final.

The Under-14 grand final sees the Lismore Swans take on the Byron Bay Magpies.

Both sides are full of confidence after defeating the minor premiers, Ballina Bombers, in their respective lead-up finals.

The Swans have had a week’s rest and coach and local stalwart Ron Meldrum believes his side will be best served by Lochie Cheffins and Roly Meldrum.

Byron, on the other hand, will have other plans, with former Adelaide Crows premiership player Shaun Rehn sure to fire his troops up for the biggest game of the year.

Keep an eye out for Will Harbison and Elliott Brain in the Black and White as this game promises to be a cliff-hanger following a closely fought finals series. Game commences at 11.45am.

The presentations for both age groups will be conducted at the completion of the Under-14 grand final, along with the hugely anticipated announcement of the Best and Fairest Medal for each age group.
