Tony Zann’s weekend fishing report
September 18, 2009
Andrew at Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina says there have been some jewfish around the walls, with the occasional bream and blackfish.
Whiting have started to pick up with the popping brigade picking up a few on the sand flats.
Good catches of larger bream up the rivers along with some nice flathead.
A few mud crabs starting to stir up the creeks and there’ll be more over coming weeks.
Not too many outside reports because of the wind but a few snapper and jew in close.
Tailor mostly up towards Lennox Head, with a few bream, whiting and the occasional flathead on the beaches as well.
Bass starting to pick up in the fresh water.
The Evans Head bar has been shallow and cranky all week, even on the high tide, although a few boats have ventured out before the north-easter has kicked in.
Out wide there are still a few jackets but they’re thinning out pretty well and there have been some snapper and pearlies on the deeper reefs.
Comparatively slow inshore with a few squire in close and the occasional trag and cobia.
The river has flathead and a few whiting, with some blackfish around the bridge approach and a few in the Bream Hole.
There’s been a reasonable swell working along the beaches for much of the week but if you can get in a session before the north-easter comes up, you could score some bream and flathead.
