Tigers, Swans win Junior AFL grand finals

September 21, 2009

SDC10017Tweed Tigers and Lismore Swans yesterday won their respective Northern Rivers Junior AFL grand finals.

U/12s Tweed Tigers 12 – 6 – 78 d Byron Magpies 2 – 2 – 14

Right from the beginning Tweed got on top of Byron and went to the 1st quarter break 6 goals up.

The Byron players knew from the start this game was going to be tough going up against the minor premiers for this season but continued to play as a team, determined to make Tweed play hard for this win.

Tweed stayed in control and didn’t allow Byron to even make a score at all in the 1st or 3rd quarters.

Both teams showed some excellent ball skills but in the end Tweed were far too strong.

Best players for Tweed, Jacob Haines, who kicked 7 goals for Tweed, Riley Jones, Kurt Skuse, Billy Stevenson, Luke Chaffer and Michael Arnold.

Byron’s best players, Caleb Brumby, Jun Touzel, Ethan Thompson, John Pupangamirri, Chi Desmond-Weller and Patrick Scurrah,

The teams were evenly matched and as one team scored it was quickly followed by the opposition matching the point.

This was a constant until half-time when the Swans were behind by 5.

With the start of 3rd quarter the Swans made a few errors and it looked like the game was to be Byron’s victory but the Swans came back stronger in the 4th to win by 2 points.

This game was low in points but extremely high in action and great ball skills by both teams.

The defensive efforts of both teams has to be commended.

Best players for Lismore, Ashlin Coyne, Lochie Cheffins, Max Beresford.

Best for Byron, Davis Jenson, Will Harbison, Elliot Brain and Sequoya Rawson-Smith
