Rovers men, Lennox women in soccer’s Champions Cup

June 4, 2008

Richmond Rovers men’s and Lennox Head women’s soccer teams will compete in the Northern Champions Cup this weekend in Coffs Harbour.

The Northern Champions Cup is a champions league style competition with the 2007 champion clubs from Coffs Harbour, Armidale/Tamworth, Port Macquarie and Football Far North Coast all competing.

The best-of-the-best concept is a joint venture between the four involved zones and aims to establish a long-term competition where both grand final winners and pointscore champions will compete regularly.

“FFNC is excited at the prospect this tournament offers our senior teams. It is the only competition of its type in Northern NSW and really gives everyone the opportunity to take their club and game to new levels,” Football Far North Coast General Manager Matt Kelso said.

“We have been instrumental in driving the concept as we continue to grow the profile of the game in our zone and provide opportunities for players to test their skills against the best players in regional football.

“Rovers, fresh from the weekend mauling of Lennox Head, will compete in the men’s competition while runaway Southern Cross Credit Union WPL leaders Lennox Head will meet up with Coffs United in a winner-takes-all match.

“Rovers and Lennox are well-placed to win this tournament and we expect they will do the zone and their clubs proud.

“Premier League Champions Rovers take a full-strength squad with them and it will be great to see how they perform.

“Lennox will be without the services of Shani Lauf and Sophie Towner but they should still have a formidable list of players at their disposal.”

Coffs Harbour International Stadium will be the venue for all fixtures, with the men’s semi-finals and the women’s final being played on Saturday  at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm respectively.

Sunday will showcase the top two teams with the final kicking off at 3pm.
