NSW, Queensland to play Super 14 trial in Lismore
October 10, 2009
Super 14 rugby union is coming to the Far North Coast, with Lismore to host a trial match between New South Wales Waratahs and the Queensland Reds on Saturday, January 23, 2010.
Sports Australia reports that the Waratahs will play their first match for 2010 against the Queensland Reds in Lismore before venturing to Orange in the central west of the State to play the Fiji Warriors.
The third and final trial will see the team travel to Canberra to play the Brumbies at Viking Park, nine days before the first match of the Super 14 against the Reds in Brisbane.
As well as the chance to see top-class rugby, FNC fans will have the opportunity to see early how the new Queensland coach, former Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie, is reshaping the forlorn Reds.
“We’ve been in discussions for quite a while with Lismore City Council and Orange City Council about bringing the Waratahs to the Far North Coast and Central West of the State,” said Jim L’Estrange, NSW Rugby chief executive officer.
“We’ve still got a couple of things to finalise, however, it’s great to now be in a position where we can announce these matches will be going ahead.
“The enthusiasm from both of these areas to bring top-line Rugby to the people is perfectly in line with our aim to ensure as many people as possible across the State have the chance to see their team, the Waratahs, live.”
NSW Rugby will head to Lismore on Wednesday to meet with local officials and inspect facilities.
