Local legend stars at Masters Games

October 14, 2009

Rugby fanatic, Bruce ‘Poppa’ Gallaher, has clocked up countless years on the field. At 75, Bruce is the oldest player in the rugby competition of the Games, having some 30 years over the youngest players allowed in the competition.

A long standing member of the Battered Prawns, the Golden Oldies team in Ballina, Bruce has a reputation for his hard play and although he may have slowed a bit, he counters this with his years of experience and a unique intepretation of the rules which he is happy to share with the referee.

John Leon, who incidently played grade rugby until 57, applauded the effort made by Bruce highlighting that “rugby is a game for all ages, it just gets a bit slower as we get older”. John hopes this will increase the interest in the Golden Oldies locally.
