Byron Bay celebrates 20 years of Rugby 7s
October 15, 2009
This weekend the Byron Bay Rugby 7s tournament will celebrate 20 years of presenting fast, ferocious and entertaining Rugby in Australia.
The ARU reports that the two-day tournament kicks-off at 9am on Saturday (17th) at the Recreational Grounds on Marvell St in Byron Bay, with finals commencing from 1pm on Sunday (18th).
The fun carnival atmosphere of the Byron Bay 7s, as well as the beautiful location, live entertainment and friendly locals has helped the popularity of this tournament grow over the past 20 years.
Southern Cross University, Sloths Rugby and Macarthur Old Boys have all participated in the tournament for 10 or more years.
This year over 80 teams submitted applications to be included in the tournament but unfortunately there is only room for 32 men’s and 16 women’s sides in the draw.
Teams from New Zealand, Fiji,Papua New Guinea and across Australia will participate.
“This action-packed tournament provides club-level players with the opportunity to test their rugby skills against international, State and first division teams,” the ARU reported.
Australian Sevens coach Mick O’Connor will be in attendance to check out the 7s talent on display.
This weekend another important accolade will also be celebrated. Mick ‘Wombat’ Leece, who has played 500 senior games for Byron, will take to the field as the only player to have participated in every Byron Bay 7s tournament since its inception.
Entry is free. For further tournament information visit http://www.byronbayrugby.com.au/

Good luck for the tournament
I was at this tournament a few years ago and its great tourney. Personally I can’t think of a better place for the first tournament since sevens was accepted into the Olympics.
