Tony Zann’s weekend fishing report

October 23, 2009

Kim at Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina says there are some mud crabs up-river around Broadwater and school jew at Wardell and just upstream of the Burns Point ferry.

A few nice flathead from the ferry to Wardell and whiting around Pimlico.

A few flatties also along the Porpoise Wall and the Town Reach down to Missingham Bridge.

Up North Creek for flathead and whiting, with mud crabs well upstream.

Beaches are fairly quiet, with the sea breeze getting up early.

Offshore there have been pearlies out on the 48-fathom line but the current has been running hard there.

At Evans Head the swell has been flat all week but most of the decent offshore catches have come from well out, with 36 fathoms being a reasonable starting point for fair squire and pearlies, with kings and amberjack as well in places.

There’s bugger-all in close in 19° water with half a knot of trickle from the north, apart from whales galore. Just the odd squire and the occasional cobia.

The beach has been turning up whiting and dart with a few nice flathead still in the gutters, while the headlands have just a few bream. Not much bait around so the chances of tailor or jew are small.

The Evans River has whiting and flathead up as far as the golf course, with some rather frisky bull sharks ripping into hooked fish as well.
