Tony Zann’s weekend fishing report

November 6, 2009

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina says there have been a couple of nice tailor taken from the North Wall on lures with fish to around 2kg.

Whiting are going fairly well in the river on beach worms and tube worms, with those using bloodworms taking some bag-limit captures. There’s still quite reasonable flathead and the occasional quality bream.

The beaches have been fishing reasonably well for tailor, jewfish and flathead, with South Ballina Beach probably being the pick spot.

Outside there haven’t been many reports, apart from the occasional snapper and some kingies. Some mahi mahi turning up on the traps.

At Evans Head, there were some reasonable whiting in the shallow holes on Airforce and Main beaches early in the week but once the wind turned onshore, the water murked up and the fish went off. You needed good beach worms to have any real success.

There have been a few flathead and whiting in the river, spread out all the way to Woodburn.

Mud crabs have started up around the golf course but you’d better tie a pit bull in a lifejacket to your trap if you expect to be the only one to check it!

Some school jew were biting around the ocean rocks on the lead-up to the full moon, with most fish just a few kilos but the odd specimen to about 8kg.

Pretty ordinary outside until you get out to about 42 fathoms, where there are kings, pearlies and the odd nice snapper.
