The family and friends of a body-boarder killed in a shark attack at Ballina earlier this week have requested that media organisations respect their privacy.

Wollongbar teenager, Peter Edmonds, was body-boarding at Lighthouse Beach about 8.15am on Tuesday (8 April 2008), when he was attacked by a shark.

The 16-year-old was pulled from the surf suffering heavy blood loss from severe lacerations to his upper and lower leg.

Attempts to revive him proved unsuccessful.

Police said that since Peter’s tragic death, his family and friends have been inundated with requests from media organisations for interviews and other information about the teenager.

“The Edmonds family and Peter’s friends initially made themselves available for media interviews and inquiries, however, they are now requesting that their privacy be respected as they grieve the loss of their loved family member and friend,” police said.

“Peter’s funeral will be held at Alstonville next week.

“The Edmonds family has requested that no media, including cameras, be allowed into the service to ensure the solemnity of the funeral is maintained.

“Family and friends hope that media organisations will comply with their privacy request, and allow them to prepare for the funeral without any further interruptions.”
