Federal Member for Page Janelle Saffin will accompany the Federal Minister for Veteran Affairs, Alan Griffin, to the 55th anniversary of the Ceasefire of the Korean War wreath laying service at Memorial Park, Grafton, on Saturday at 1.30pm.
“It will be an honour to accompany the Minister to this wonderful commemorative event to honour the Armistice of the Korean War,” Ms Saffin said today.
“I congratulate John Fitzpatrick, secretary of the Grafton Korean War Veterans Association, who has been the principal driver for this weekend event here in Grafton
“He has done a fantastic job, along with Snowy McClymont, Mick Judge and their wives who have raised money towards this event.
“I also acknowledge the president and secretary of the Grafton RSL Sub Branch, Brian Bultitude and his executive and Arthur Lysard, the General Manager Grafton District Services Club.
“The Korean War Veterans Association is a group of 8 to 10 veterans and friends and is affiliated with the North Coast Korean War Veterans Association, which is based around the Coffs Harbour area.”
Grafton is the birthplace of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Green DSO, who was the most senior Australian officer who tragically died of his wounds received on 30th October 1950.
Ms Saffin said Grafton was chosen as the final location of the Korean War Honour Roll Quilt by his widow, Mrs Olwyn Green.
“There were 17,000 Australian sailors, soldiers and airmen who served in the Korean War, with 340 Australians losing their lives. We honour all those who served here, along with their families and friends,” Ms Saffin said.
