Police from Traffic Services Sydney and Highway Patrol Police from North region have been in the area for the last month supporting Richmond Local Area Command Highway Patrol Police targeting speed, road trauma and antisocial driving behaviour.

“Within the Richmond Local Area Command, fatality numbers from motor vehicle accidents have ballooned, experiencing a 125% increase on this time last year, with a large majority of these deaths being attributed to speed,” a police spokesman said.

“Locals are more likely to be involved in a fatal accident close to their place of residence — 56% of fatalities have been locals.

“The focus of the Operation is speeding on our roads. Local roads regularly are subject of complaint to police by residents concerned for the safety of motorists and residents.

“In the last four days police have issued 148 speeding infringements alone.

“A continued saturation focus will include Nimbin Road, Kyogle Road, Rous Road, Ballina Road/Bruxner Highway, Dunoon Road, Union Street, Bangalow Road, Brunswick Street, Wyrallah Road and Dawson Street. If you speed, prepare to be caught.

“Locals can expect to see police motorcycles, marked and unmarked Highway Patrol vehicles working across the command, focusing on both the highway and local roads.”

Infringements have been issued for offences including unlicensed driver, vehicle registration, traffic-related, speed, seatbelts, heavy vehicles, bicycle offences and defect notices for unroadworthy vehicles.

“The operation will be ongoing through to the New Year. The next vehicle you see might be a police vehicle,” the spokesman said.

“Motorists are reminded there will be a continuing high level of Highway Patrol Police visibility during the operation.

“If you flaunt the law, be prepared to wear the consequences.”
