Cancer Council NSW’s Far North Coast regional office is encouraging local residents to think twice before going Christmas shopping, and consider buying a gift that will make a difference to the lives of those affected by cancer in your community.

Diana Fisher, Regional Programs Co-ordinator at Cancer Council NSW’s Alstonville regional office, said that by purchasing a Cancer Council product, or making a donation through the In Celebration program, you can do much more than say ‘Merry Christmas’.

“Christmas can be a difficult time for people with cancer, and their loved ones,” said Diana.

“The In Celebration program, where individuals forgo a traditional gift in lieu of a donation to Cancer Council, gives people the opportunity to send a strong message of support to people living with cancer in the community.

“It can be hard to decide on gifts for family, friends and work colleagues – especially for those who have everything.

“In Celebration is a gift that gives throughout the year, long after the Christmas wrapping has been thrown into the bin.”

For those who are still keen to place something under the tree, all supporters who donate through In Celebration receive a special certificate to give as a reminder and keepsake of their contribution.

Cancer Council Shops also sell a range of sun-smart products which make ideal Christmas gift ideas or ‘stocking fillers’.

“One of our most popular items at Christmas is our pop-up sun shelters, a perfect gift for any family,” said Diana.

“They are easily erected for a barbecue in the park or a day at the beach and feature a UPF rating of 50+, the highest rating in Australia.”

Other great Cancer Council gift ideas include adult clothing, as well as a cute collection of children’s protective clothing and swimwear, hats and fashionable sunglasses.

For the ladies there’s a range of SPF protected cosmetics – including lip glosses, lipsticks, foundation, moisturisers and body lotions.

You can also purchase a special range of Christmas cards through Cancer Council shops, as well as a wide variety of all your summer sunscreen essentials.

New products available for this summer include a spray-on foam sunscreen, and 50ml Sport Ezi Clip sunscreen containers that clip onto clothing or belts so the active outdoor person can always have their sunscreen nearby.

“Cancer Council is committed to defeating cancer. We receive no direct government funding and rely on community support. All money raised through In Celebration and the sale of Cancer Council items will be used to lessen the burden of cancer on the people of Northern Rivers,” said Diana.

“Each year more than 1811 people are diagnosed with cancer in our region, and more than 600 will die.

“With your support, we can help patients, their family and friends through vital cancer research, prevention, information and support services.”
