A man has been airlifted to the Gold Coast Hospital after being bitten by a shark while surfing south of Tweed Heads this morning.

Emergency service personnel were called to Fingal Head following reports a 31-year-old man had suffered injuries to his left thigh after being attacked about 70m offshore.

Police were told the man made his own way back to shore where he was assisted by friends until ambulance officers arrived.

A landing zone was established on Fingal Road for the Careflight helicopter, which arrived about 10am.

The man was stabilised before being transported to Gold Coast Hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.

Police have closed all beaches between Fingal Head and Kingscliff while a second helicopter performs a precautionary sweep of the area.

No information is known about the shark involved.
