Member for Lismore Thomas George is offering further information about a free vision screening program available to all four-year-old children in the Lismore electorate.

“Young children rarely complain about their eyesight and may not even realise that they are having trouble seeing,” Mr George said.

“Unfortunately the only way to tell if a child has a vision problem is to have one eye tested at a time.

“The StEPS (Statewide Eyesight Preschooler Screening) initiative offers all four-year-old children free vision by targeting those children attending pre-schools and day care centres for vision assessment.

“The current recommendation is that all children have their vision screened before they start school and it is therefore strongly recommended that all four-year-old children participate in the StEPS program.

“Children who are found to have a problem will be referred for a full test by an eye health professional.”

Mr George said a free brochure about the program was available by contacting his office.
