“Jan has given tireless service in a wide range of roles to our community over many years,” Member for Ballina Don Page said when presenting the award yesterday.

“She has done this and also raised a family.

“Jan’s work in the local community has been widely credited with promoting health and community issues in the non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal community.”

Mrs Mangleson’s list of achievements include founding the Nursing Mothers Association (North Coast) in the 1970s; establishing an Aboriginal health program encouraging breastfeeding among Aboriginal communities in northern NSW; Chair of the Brunswick-Byron Area Health Service for nine years; President of the Australian Lactation Consultants Association for three years; and Byron Shire Councillor for nine years.

“When you look at the incredible list of Jan’s achievements, it is even more remarkable when you know that she is the mother of eight children and grandmother to 19 grandchildren,” Mr Page said.

“Jan has given so much of herself to community service while juggling the demands of a large family. She is indeed an inspiration and a very worthy recipient of this year’s award.

“On behalf of the Ballina Electorate I thank Jan for her many years of tireless community service.”
