Police have charged a man with murder following the death of an Irish tourist at Byron Bay earlier this month.
About 3am (Sunday 11 May), members of the public found the 30-year-old man lying on the road at the corner of Jonson and Lawson streets with severe head injuries suffered during an alleged assault.
He was airlifted to a Brisbane hospital where he died several days later. Irish newspapers have identified the dead man as Colm Kenny from Ballycastle in Ballina, County Mayo.
Police launched an investigation, which led to a 20-year-old man attending Byron Bay Police Station this morning.
The man from Newrybar was charged with murder and appeared at Tweed Heads Local Court today.
He was granted conditional bail and will next appear at Lismore Local Court on July 22.
Police continue to appeal for any witnesses to the alleged assault to contact them at Byron Bay Police Station or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
