A man will appear in court today charged with numerous offences, including the assault of an 86-year-old man at Evans Head  yesterday.

Police will allege that about 12.30pm the 24-year-old man attended a friend’s home in Booyong Street and assaulted her. He left the address and returned later that afternoon smashing a window. He also assaulted a young male.

The 24-year-old man allegedly went to a house in Cashmore Street, stealing a screwdriver. The owner of the house then saw the man in his vehicle, using the screwdriver to try to steal his vehicle and confronted him.

Police will allege the 86-year-old was pushed to the ground by the 24-year-old, breaking his hip. The younger man sat on top of the victim, threatening him with the screwdriver. The victim pleaded with the man not to stab him and the offender fled.

Evans Head and Coraki police located the 24-year-old a short time later in a nearby supermarket. He was arrested and taken to Lismore Police Station.

The local man was charged with grievous bodily harm assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, four counts of assault, break, enter and steal, attempt to steal motor vehicle, possession of implements, armed with intent, malicious damage and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear at Lismore Local Court today.

The 86-year-old man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a stable condition. He will undergo surgery today for a fractured hip.
