Police and other emergency services will continue a search today for an American national, reported missing while swimming at Tallow Beach at Byron Bay.

Around 12.20pm yesterday (Tuesday 11 May), the 32-year-old man went to the beach with two friends for a swim.

Whilst his friends were surfing, the swimmer disappeared.

The pair searched the surf before stopping council rangers who were driving along the beach.

Together they continued to search the water and beachfront for the man, without success.

Around 1.15pm, emergency services were contacted and police from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command led a larger search operation, also involving jet ski riders from Surf Rescue, NSW Ambulance Service personnel, the Westpac Lifesaver 4 helicopter and Brunswick Sea Rescue.

The man was not located.

Anyone with information about the man’s disappearance is urged to contact Byron Bay Police on (02) 6685 9499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
