The long weekend road toll stands at five after the death of a truck driver in the north of the state overnight.

About 9.50pm police and emergency services were called to reports of a truck crash on the Bruxner Highway about 7km south of Lismore.

Upon arrival a prime mover was located overturned. The male driver of the truck died at the scene.

Inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing, however, it appears that the truck was travelling southbound along the highway when it failed to negotiate a bend and rolled over.

As a result of the crash a number of fuel tanks were ruptured. Hazmat attended at the scene.

The Bruxner Highway is closed in both directions. It is expected to remain closed until late morning.

Road diversions are in place. Traffic is being diverted via Springrove Road and Caniaba Road. Diversions for heavy vehicles is via the Casino to Coraki Road and then down to Woodburn and onto the Pacific Highway.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
