Page MP Janelle Saffin has announced that the President of Timor-Leste, Dr José Ramos Horta, will be including Lismore in his itinerary as part of his visit to Australia next week.

“I am delighted that the Dr Ramos Horta has accepted my invitation to visit the Page electorate in his tight schedule,” Ms Saffin said.

“We are privileged to have not only a President, but a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate coming to our region.

“Dr Ramos-Horta is the second President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste since the country’s restoration of independence in 2002.

“In 1996 he received a Nobel Peace Prize Peace for his efforts to bring peace and independence to East Timor.

“As many people know, before standing for the seat of Page I worked for three-and-a-half years as senior policy and political advisor to Mr Ramos Horta when he was Foreign Minister, Prime Minister and later President of Timor-Leste.

“There are many significant links between the Northern Rivers region and Timor-Leste, particularly through Southern Cross University, and I am looking forward to welcoming Dr Ramos Horta to this area.”
