Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina says the big tides have been pushing some salt water up the river against the fresh and especially on the high tide there have been bream and flathead in the Town Reach, with a few whiting around the walls.

Mud crabs are slow because of the cold water.

Quite a few jew have been spun up around the walls, mostly schoolies but some more impressive fish around 15kg.

Away from the dirty water around the river mouth, some tailor to almost 3kg have been caught at South Ballina Beach and up at Broken Head.

Boats have got outside today for the first time for a week.

At Evans Head, the surf is settling down for the first time for a week and some boats have also headed out here. We’ll just have to wait and see what’s come in.

Improving conditions on the beaches with some reasonable bream turning up and some nice holes and gutters forming, but there’s not much driving or parking room at high tide and plenty of beach erosion. Bed rock is showing on the beach a couple of hundred metres south of Salty Lake.

Some school jew and bream have been taken from the headland this week.

The river has quite a few bream and some flathead, with whiting still around upstream of the bridge.
