Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina says the river is very coloured, with clear water pushing in on the run-up tide up to about the RSL.

Flathead, bream and blackfish around the rock walls.

Plenty of mud crabs in lower Emigrant Creek, the main river and in North Creek around Prospect Bridge.

A couple of pros have ventured out and come home with a few mackerel but the bar could be a problem at low tide with the swell forecast to hit 2.5m over the weekend.

Quite a few jewies to 20kg around the walls taking soft plastics and hardbodies, but not a great deal of jewie action back in the river.

Some tailor from the headlands but watch the swell this weekend.

At Evans Head there have been some blackfish around the breakwalls with the occasional jewfish.

Flathead and bream in the river, which is now clean well above the bridge on the high tide.

The river mouth is extremely shallow and during the troughs at low tide there’s bare sand from about half-way along the South Wall and it’s only knee-deep at the bar, which is breaking in any sort of swell.

Beaches are pretty ordinary, with the outer banks well out, closer gutters not really deep enough and plenty of whitewater in between.

Watch the rocks in the making swell over the weekend.
