The Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League (NRRRL) competition was formed in 2005 when it was agreed upon to combine the traditional Group 1 and Group 18 Rugby League competitions. The merger of these two traditional groups has created what is a truly regional competition with first grade, reserve grade, and Under-18 teams located as far north as Tweed Heads, Grafton in the south and as far west as Kyogle and Casino.
The 2009 Northern Rivers Rugby League competition is composed of 14 teams and sees the introduction of two new first-grade sides, Northern United and Evans Head Bombers:
Northern United, Tweed Coast Raiders, Murwillumbah Mustangs, Cudgen Green Hornets, Mullumbimby Giants, Byron Bay Red Devils, Ballina Seagulls, Marist Brothers Rams, Casino Cougars, Kyogle Turkeys, Evans Heads Bombers, Lower Clarence Magpies, Grafton Ghosts and Grafton Rhinos.
